YS offers loan amnesty
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Foundation (YS) is offering a loan amnesty programme with full condonation of surcharges and penalties to help its delinquent borrowers pay their outstanding loans. Sabah Foundation Director Datuk Sapawi Ahmad said this is in line with the foundation's vision to be dynamic, people-oriented, concerned and committed to its objective to help Sabahans.

"Borrowers who have benefited from Sabah Foundation's loans but have yet to repay can come to the carnival here and they will be assisted by our officers from the Repayment Section so we could find ways how to settle the remaining loans," he said.

Sapawi said this when officiating the Education Carnival held at the Sabah Foundation Building, here, Saturday.

He added that the foundation's Education Working Committee had approved a 20 per cent rebate out of the total remaining unpaid loan to borrowers who made full payment during the carnival.

It was not revealed how many of Sabah Foundation borrowers have defaulted on their loan repayment.

However, records 10 years ago showed a total of 2,262 Sabah Foundation study loan borrowers who have completed their studies have yet to pay their loans amounting to RM70 million.

Some of them are doing well in their jobs – in the public and private sectors – and even some are politicians.

In the meantime, Sapawi invited interested students to attend the Seminar Skor A+ SPM which will be held at the Sabah Foundation's Auditorium today (Sunday).

"Last year, when we organised the seminar, around 1,000 students attended and this year, we hope the number will increase. Other than that, there will also be a motivational seminar by Dr Shukri Abdullah and Entrepreneurship Seminar for youths interested to become entrepreneurs," he said.

Other seminars include Seminar Rahsia Cemerlang Matematik by Dato' Yahya Zainal Abidin and Seminar Profesionalisma Kedoktoran and Homeopathy by Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohamad Abd Razak.

During the event, Sapawi handed over one-off financial assistance of RM500 each to 200 SPM school leavers to help them with their studies.

"The main objective of this carnival is to provide information and opportunities to students to enter higher institutes of learning through the various education exhibition. It is also held to motivate and guide secondary school students through series of seminars.

"Other than that, this carnival is also used as a vehicle for Sabah Foundation to be closer to the people through education," he said.

The three-day Education Carnival, which will end tomorrow (Monday), was held in conjunction with Sabah Foundation's 50th Anniversary and Sabah Foundation's 27th Excellence Scholarship Award Ceremony which will be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman today (Sunday).

The carnival is open to the public and is participated by more than 100 institutes of higher learning, both public and private, private and public sectors.

Visitors will be entertained by several well-known local artistes, including Datuk Ramli Sarip, Atu of Kumpulan ZERO Maharaja Lawak Mega, Felix AF, Velvet AF and Jimmy Palikat.

Among the activities include lucky draw, tug-of-war competition between various sections of Sabah Foundation, singing performances from participating institutes of higher learning and briefing on entry requirements to the institutes.

Sapawi invited the public, especially students and school-leavers, to visit the carnival and get involved in the merrymaking while, at the same time, benefit from the information and knowledge they could gather during the event.
