Labuan: Maybank International Labuan Ltd (Mill) on Saturday brought a ray of hope to two hardcore poor families here who had been living in their dilapidated homes for over a decade. The corporate player has decided to assist the families by channelling assistance to repair the houses which are in poor condition.

The families' school-going children will also be assisted with tuition fees and other necessary basic needs.

Mill General Manager Khairuddin Abdul Rahman said the assistance was part of the Mill's corporate social responsibility (CSR) under the Maybank's Cahaya Kasih Employee Volunteer Programme.

"Our visit to these two families who are among the 33 identified families to receive ongoing support in our 'Empower to Empower' (E2E) programmes, was part of our ongoing employee volunteerism activities. We are glad to chip in to assist these families and their school-going children," he said after the presentation of the aid to the families at Kg Belukut and Kg Sg Miri, here.

Mill began by engaging with 35 disadvantaged students from four different schools of SMK Taman Perumahan Bedaun, SM Anthony, SMK Pantai and SMK Rancha-Rancha, whose ages range from 13 to 17 years.

"And out this group of students, we identified a smaller group of seven students to receive further assistance from us," he said.

Khairuddin said the employee volunteerism effort is one of the best ways to demonstrate the organisation's commitment to corporate citizenry and is very much in line with Maybank's mission of humanising financial services.

"For 2016, Mill had selected to undertake initiatives to support education within the community as they believed it was an effective way to create sustainable impact on families, and by extension, the community at large.

"In this way, we can work together to help uplift communities across the region in line with our commitment to advance Asia's ambition. Maybank's Cahaya Kasih has extended its charity and community projects to Myanmar and Cambodia," he said.

Khairuddin said Mill's employees would continue to engage the current group on underprivileged students identified, throughout the year to offer social support not only in providing assistance in tangible forms but also in other areas such as motivation, financial planning and emotional support.
