Principals warned not to disrupt harmony
Tawau: School principals risk getting demoted if they fan racial and religious issues, State Education Director Maimunah Suhaibul warned. She reminded that it is their duty to promote racial and religious harmony and respect in school.

"Avoid siding only one particular race or religion in school because such action would raise an issue.

Race and religion are sensitive matters and must be treated with care," she said when launching the 40th Sabah Secondary School Principals Education Management Conference, here. She was representing Senior Director of Education Malaysia, Dato Sri Khair Mohamad Yusof.

She said principals should learn from Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who stopped his speech during a Harvest Festival celebration out of respect to the Muslim call for prayer.

On another matter, she urged principals to accept students who have been placed in their school by the District Education Office even though they did poorly academically.

"They must not be exempted or not allowed to sit for exams…Accept them and educate them until they succeed," she said.

She also advised them to ensure their students do not post inappropriate materials in social media for such action could land them into trouble, including disciplinary action.

On SPM school leavers, Maimunah said the State Education Department will set up a Bumiputera Economic Empowerment Committee to gather data on their progress after sitting for the exam.

"We want to see their results and where they are after SPM. We want to know what we can do to help those who are not doing anything but only stay at home."
