IWK concerned over primitive sanitation in Labuan

Labuan: National sewerage company, Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd, has expressed concern over primitive sanitation (toilet system) here.IWK senior communication manager, Shahrul Nizam Sulaiman, said the traditional ways should no longer be used as they had negative impact on public health and the environment."Unsystematic or primitive sanitation can potentially lead to various water-borne diseases like typhoid, cholera and polio," he said after a media briefing on the Water and Sewage Integrated Bill, here, Wednesday.ADVERTISEMENT He said there were 2,718 flush toilets here recommended to be replaced with individual septic tanks (ISTs)."We estimate that about RM8 million is needed to replace all the flush toilets into septic tanks that are connected to the IWK sewage treatment plants. There are 8,357 houses here currently with ISTs," he said.Shahrul said a total of 24 IWK sewage treatment plants had been built here for 48,492 houses and various other premises.Meanwhile, he said the Water and Sewage Integrated Bill which came into effect on March 1 was to ease the burden of account holders in settling their utility bills.ADVERTISEMENT Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

"The new billing system will help account holders to settle accumulated water and sewage bills in one bill, and they can settle it at the Labuan Water Department," he said. Shahrul said compared to other areas, Labuan was rated top in terms of bill settlement with RM17.8 million collected last year compared to RM10.4 million in 2014.
