Roofs of three Ranau schools blown off

Ranau: At least two school roofs were blown away while another suffered minor damages due to strong winds which occurred here on Tuesday afternoon.District Education Officer Siti Hamne Hashim who confirmed the 3.45pm incident said the three schools affected in the incident were SK Bongkud, SK Tampios and SK Miruru.

"The storm blew off the roof of the building blocks of four classrooms at SK Bongkud.

The classes involved were the Year 6 and Year 5, as well as two special classes for Science and Language.

"SK Tampios was also affected with roof of one block blown off. The affected building block housed the store office, store textbook and PJK equipment.

"Another school Sk Miruru also experienced minor damage on the ceiling of the building of its computer lab.

We are relieved that no casualties or injuries were reported," she said.

Siti Hamne ordered the schools involved to have alternative classes.

"Among other efforts undertaken to address the incident is to instruct the schools to ensure that all furniture and equipment found in classrooms involved be transferred immediately to safer place.

"For SK Bongkud, as the proposed alternative class which will be open starting tomorrow is in the school operation room for Year 6 and in the Open School hall for Year 5 students.

"Similar measures will also be conducted in the other schools. We understand that members of the PIBG in each school will help in cleaning the impact of the storm through gotong-royong," she said.

According to her, the teaching and learning in all schools here will go on as usual and had reported the damage incurred to the State Education Department for further action.
