BALING: The Communist Cave located in this region will be gazetted as a tourist site based on its historical importance during the communist era. The District Officer of Baling, Datuk Dzohir Md Zain, said with this gazettement it was hoped that the cave that was once a shelter and communist headquarters would be preserved.

"The cave was once a strategic area for communists to hide out in Baling.

"It is certainly of historical importance in Malaysia, and so it should be gazetted," he said when contacted here Wednesday.

He said the District Office had already completed the design process of the road or entrances to facilitate the tourists coming to visit the Communist Cave.

He said the Baling District Council intended to open entrances of the communist cave to the public as a tourist attraction, other than climbing expeditions to Gunung Baling.

"Thus, we are looking forward to the support and cooperation of the Federal government in efforts to protect and preserve these caves, as historical heritage sites of the future," he said.

The Communist Cave at Kampung Weng, that takes at least a two hour's journey from the town of Baling, was the largest communist operations room then, and was around two kilometres away from the border of Thailand.

"Some of the wreckage of helicopters and airplanes near the cave should be studied in terms of its origins to determine whether it belonged to the communists or otherwise, he said, adding that there were also Chinese inscriptions in the cave. – Bernama
