Penampang: Each village in the district must form their own Volunteer Firefighter Team (Bomba Sukarelawan) and Fire Fighters Community (Komuniti Bomba) after it was revealed that the district suffered 304 cases of fire incidents, mostly forest and bush fire, since January.Moyog Assemblyman Terrence Siambun said having the volunteers among the community is crucial during the drought season as well as during the monsoon season.

"The community will act as the frontline to control the situation and relay all vital information to the district Fire Department," he said.

He added that the community should help fire fighters instead of throwing negative remarks at them.

He praised the heroic effort of the Penampang Fire Department who worked more than 12 hours per shift to ensure the safety of the community despite having less than 60 personnel to cover the whole of Penampang and Putatan districts.

Some of the firefighters were even called upon to help put out the peat fire in Binsuluk, Membakut.

As a show of appreciation for their effort, Terrence together with Penampang MP Darell Leiking, presented certificates of appreciation to the Penampang Fire Department on Wednesday as a recognition of their heroism.

They also donated 22 cartons of drinking water for the firefighters.

Siambun, who is also Sabah Keadilan Information Chief, said a total of 1,358 volunteers have registered as Bomba Sukarelawan in the State, but none of them was from Penampang.

"A back-up team for the firefighters is essential in ensuring the safety of the community in Penampang. Furthermore, proper training will be given to all the volunteers by the station's officer in charge, Mohammed Akramin Sakirun, and his officers, not only to fight fire but also in search and rescue operations during floods," he said.

Siambun noted that the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Chairman of Kg Terawi already made the first move to meet with Akramin to ask about the Bomba Sukarelawan.

The setting up of this team, said Siambun, is also supported by the District Officer Luvita Koisun.

"As the representative of Penampang, I am offering my assistance to Luvita to ensure the setting up this volunteer team.

I am more than willing to collaborate with her as I hope, come June this year, we will be able to form a team at least," he said.
