Kota Kinabalu: Inter-marriage can be tough, even for the most open-minded, but newlyweds Stacy and Akim Ahmad have figured it all out.Stacy, a Kadazandusun, who embraced Islam ahead of tying the knot with Akim, a Johor-born Malay, plan on going back to Sabah for Christmas or Johor for Aidilfitri so as not to forget both sides of the family's roots.

Akim, who wedded Stacy in a private ceremony at a hotel here on Friday, said it's a matter of sharing the best of both worlds.

"It would be easier for me to arrange as I will follow Akim back to Johor for Hari Raya as my family doesn't celebrate Aidilfitri.

"And for Christmas, we will come back to Sabah… there will be many occasions that we can celebrate," Stacy said after the akad nikah ceremony.

Akim said they can share their cultures.

"So we respect each other's culture and at the same time we can get to know each other's family," he said while not disregarding the idea of holding their own Aidilfitri open house here.

The ceremony was conducted by Matlin Dimin from the State Islamic Affairs Department with Stacy's brother Mohd Adam Hakimi Anam as Stacy's 'Wali' (guardian) and a dowry of RM300.

The newlyweds, both clad in white, were celebrated by close family members and friends, including fellow artistes, among them Hafiz Suip and Hazama.

Admitting he was nervous – Akim had to recite the 'Akad Nikah' (wedding vows) twice – he said he didn't practise reciting the vows prior to the ceremony as he wanted it to be done "sincerely."

"I was also nervous, thinking that I'll be carrying a responsibility as a husband.

"My responsibility is bigger now. I will not only have to take care of myself but also her and afterwards, our children and grandchildren. So, I hope everyone will pray for the best for us," Akim said.

Stacy concurred with Akim, saying the most important thing now is to do things as one.

"Previously, I could think only for my own needs, and so did he, but now we have to think about many things as one.

"Yes, we did learn to do so and now we have to get used to it in every aspect of our lives… mutual understanding as what people say."

As for the private ceremony with limited number of invitees, they apologised to everyone, especially their fans as they just wanted to do a simple event.

"If it is up to me to decide, I would have liked a very simple ceremony…but we have to respect our parents and our elders.

They wanted a proper ceremony, so they invited their close friends as well. We do this to make them happy and to see them smile," said Akim.

Stacy and Akim were engaged on Sept 26 last year after she had embraced Islam on Aug 24 the same year and chose the name Ummu Shaikhah Stacy Anam as her Muslim name.

They have been an item since 2010 and finally decided to tie the knot on Friday.

She rose to fame after she was crowned the winner for Akademi Fantasia Season 6 in 2008 and Akim whose real name is Afiq Hakim Ahmad was one of the contestants for Akademi Fantasia Season 7.

Stacy has numerous number one hits under her belt as well as four albums, namely 'The Best of Stacy' which released in 2008, 'Aku Stacy' (2009), 'Stay-C' (2011) and '#1' (2014).

And in the recent 30th Anugerah Juara Lagu, she was also a finalist with 'Not For Sale' while Akim and his band, The Majistret won the competition with 'Potret'. Akim and The Majistret also won Best Performance and bagged a total cash prize of RM72,000.

In 2012, Akim released his self-titled debut album before becoming the frontman for a rock outfit Akim and The Majistret in 2014.

The band released their first album 'Patriot' in 2015 and it was well received by music listeners, especially Akim's fans.

A wedding reception was held at the same hotel on Friday evening, while another reception will be conducted at Penampang, this evening (Saturday).
