BONGAWAN: Malaysians who are abroad need to register with the Malaysian embassy in the respective countries to avoid difficulties in getting necessary information in the event of unexpected incidents.Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said this is important as there are still many Malaysians who have yet to do so, especially students and those travelling abroad for holidays.

A directive to register with the respective Malaysian embassies when overseas had been issued but is not compulsory.

"We fear that failure to do so will complicate the process of obtaining information to find out how many Malaysians may be involved if there were natural disasters and untoward incidents.

"Unfortunately, as of today, less than 20 per cent of them have registered with our embassies overseas.

Some take lightly such advice while some would not even care to do so," he said.

Anifah who is also Umno Kimanis Divisional head, said this during his Chinese New Year annual walkabout at the township, Friday. He was accompanied by Bongawan Assemblyman Datuk Mohamad bin Alamin and community leaders here.

There were several tragedies involving young Malaysians abroad the past month. One Malaysian student died after being hit by a tube train in London, one died in a skiing accident in France, three died in a road crash in Jordan and one Malaysian medical student died in a road accident in Chennai, India.

On latest development of establishing a new full district combining Bongawan and Membakut, Anifah who is also Kimanis MP, said such plan is expected to be realised within this year.

He said the negotiation is in the final stage as both elected representatives namely Datuk Mohamad bin Alamin and Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif are following up the vital plan.

"Several places have been identified as among suitable locations to name the full district and centre of administration.

"Once the appropriate location has been determined, we will announce it which will be convenient to the people," Anifah said.
