100 boats checked in Semporna

Semporna: Close to 100 boats were inspected since a four-day integrated operation was launched Friday. The operation was aimed to ensure public compliance with the law and regulations imposed at both sea and land. District Police Chief, Supt Peter Umbuas, said 507 locals and 88 foreigners (with legal documents) were inspected.ADVERTISEMENT "We also recorded a total of 29 cases under the Port and Harbour Enactment 2002 (Sabah licensing for small vessels) and two immigration cases," he said.According to him, the operation was focused on the Semporna tourism jetty, public jetty, ocean and the lepa-lepa ground jetty which also involved inspections on boat operators' licence as well as tourist vehicle drivers. He added that enforcement at tourism and public jetty was launched to ensure all operating boats comply with the rules and regulations."Every boat movement, especially those transporting tourists, are required to report at the tourism jetty to inform their destination and tourists' activities so that it can be closely monitored and secured."We also want to ensure that the boat skippers are identified, have permits and their boats in secure condition," he added.ADVERTISEMENT Meanwhile, the operation on land involved checking and arresting illegals, while the Road Transport Department and traffic were focused on traffic rules and regulation to ensure motorists abide by traffic rules as well as have valid driving licenses and permit. Peter said the operation also aimed to secure control at sea to prevent cross border crime, especially from intruders, kidnappers, robbery and smuggling.

The operation also involves marine police, Immigration Department, National Registration Department, Customs Department, Port and Harbours Department and the Semporna District Council.
