44 illegals detained, 110 summonses to traffic offenders in ops

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 113 people, including 36 children, were rounded up for screening during an integrated operation led by city police in five separate locations in Inanam, Sulaman and Sepanggar on Saturday. The raids, which were carried out in three locations in Inanam, namely Kg Lembaga Padi, the market and a factory, as well as Kg Suang Parai Sulaman and Kg Gentisan in Sepanggar, involved 11 officers and 149 personnel from the police, auxiliary police, National Registration Department, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd, City Hall and Civil Defence Department.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said of the 113, a total of 44 Filipinos comprising 10 men, 17 women, 10 boys and seven girls were detained under the Immigration Act for failure to produce valid documents.

The close to eight-hour "Ops Bersepadu", which ended at about 9am Sunday, also saw six people, including one woman, detained after they tested positive for drugs.

He said those detained had been sent to the central lock-up in Kepayan for further investigations, while those who tested positive for drugs were being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act.

"The raids were prompted by information received from civilians on illegal immigrant settlements and frequent crime in the areas," he said, adding that the operation went smoothly without any untoward incident.

In a separate operation, a total of 110 summonses for various traffic offences were issued during "Ops Motosikal and Ops Samseng Jalanan", which involved one city traffic police officer and 12 personnel, here, Saturday.

The "Ops Samseng Jalanan", which ended at about 4am, was conducted along Jalan Coastal, Imago, Jalan Lintas-Luyang and 1Borneo in Likas, while the "Ops Mabuk" roadblock which ended at about 3.30am was mounted along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Chandra said a total of 38 vehicles, including 22 motorcycles, as well as 40 motorists including four women were thoroughly inspected during the operation.

"Two men, aged 20 and 26, were detained and their vehicles seized for investigation," he said, adding that two out of 12 people who took the breathalyser test were also brought in for questioning after they exceeded the allowed alcohol limit.

A total of 14 motorcycles and three other vehicles were also seized and brought to the city traffic police station for further action.
