Semporna: The practice of visiting others' open house during festive season practised all this while had indirectly fostered unity among the various races in the country, said Assistant Finance Minister, Datuk Ramlee Marhaban. He said such practices should be continued because the spirit of unity among the members of the community can be fostered.

"With visiting open house of other races, we get to understand; respect their religion, culture and customs of the respective race and this can strengthened relationships among the people," he said when met at the Hari Raya Open House at the Kg Seraya open hall, here.

Ramlee, who is also Bugaya assemblyman, said the people must maintain and strengthen unity through visiting others during the celebration of a festival.

"The practice of open house celebrations such as Hari Raya could become the benchmark for unity in this country which is consistent with the 1Malaysia concept mooted by the Prime Minister.

"This is the spirit of Hari Raya…our country is able to jointly celebrate the strengthening of cooperation, solidarity, respect for cultural diversity, which forms part of the Malaysia.

"We hope with the spirit of 1Malaysia which is evident here, all races can celebrate the spirit of it (unity)," he said.

He said unity is quite important for the stability and progress of the country, thus enabling communities and countries to face the challenges ahead, particularly at the global level.

"The culture of visiting others is not only during Hari Raya celebrations, but we can all see this tradition during Chinese New Year, Harvest Festival, Christmas, Deepavali and so on.

"The government is encouraging this culture be maintained for the sake of strengthening national integration among the various races in the country," he explained.

Ramlee said the people should be thankful to be able to celebrate all the festivals in the country.

"The festival that we celebrate today is not only for the Malays, but we have seen other communities such as Kadazans, Muruts, Chinese and Indians are also celebrating it.

"This may reflect the strength of our national unity and political stability in the country, thus causing foreign investors not to hesitate to come invest in our country," he said.
