Collaboration to improve quality of Sabah toilets
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Tourism Board (STB) together with the organisers of the World Toilet Association (WTA) 2nd World Toilet Convention, Quality Restroom Association Malaysia (QRAM) will be working together to improve the quality of toilets, here. The collaboration will be focused on premises with high numbers of tourist visitors, especially at the entry point of the City, the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) - both terminals, which has seen its share of complaints over the quality and cleanliness.

Its Chairman, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, said STB wants to take the opportunity to work with QRAM to improve the quality of toilets in the city to help boost the tourism industry in Kota Kinabalu, in conjunction with 2nd World Toilet Convention.

"Everywhere we go, we hear people complaining about the quality and cleanliness of the toilets in Kota Kinabalu, regardless whether it is free or paid, public toilets or shopping mall toilets. We always hear the same complaints.

"Many measures have been taken, many ideas have been implemented, but still the problem fails to be solved and this is having a very negative impact towards our tourism industry because when our tourists come and see our toilets are wet, smelly and dirty, they will remember this and tell other people about it - this is not good for our tourism industry," said Bangkuai.

He said this during a courtesy visit paid on him by the Convention Working Committee, led by Organising Chairman, Damian Chai and Convention Director, Datuk Dr Jim K Y Lim. Also present was Deputy Convention Director, Tony Lim, Executive Secretary, Fadzil Lim @ Lucas and PR and Media Director, Gordon Horace Chin.

According to Bangkuai, he hopes that with Kota Kinabalu hosting a world-level event such as the World Toilet Convention, the quality of toilets in Kota Kinabalu will have a positive impact and the people will learn the importance of maintaining the quality, cleanliness and functionality of toilets.

"I agree with the Committee where the quality and cleanliness of toilets are everyone's responsibility and everyone can play a very important role in maintaining them, based on the Four Step Method formulated by the Convention Technical Director, Datuk Dr Chua Kim Hing.

"This is a great opportunity for us to show the delegates of the Convention that the people of Kota Kinabalu is capable of maintaining the cleanliness of our toilets not just during the convention, but even before and after the convention - this is play a part in boosting our tourism industry," he said.

Bangkuai added that this is why STB will be supporting the convention in any way they can, as the convention is expected to receive some 3,000 participations and delegates from the 69 member countries of WTA, which is based in Suwon City, Korea.

"I am glad that the Committee is taking tourism, culture and nature in Sabah into great consideration with the Convention - even the Convention Logo features the Nepenthes Lowii and the Tree Shrew, where the shrew uses the plant as both a source of food and also as a toilet - something that is only found in Sabah," he said.

According to Chai he is very happy that STB will be supporting the convention and both QRAM and STB will be collaborating more in the future, especially in the field of toilet design, construction, grading and quality control.

"I would like to thank Datuk Joniston (Bangkuai) for agreeing to support this cause and hopefully QRAM's relation with STB will go a long way after the Convention ends," he added.
