Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Museum Department is organising a first-ever historical family photograph competition, themed "Family History Makes The Nation History", in conjunction with its 50th anniversary celebration.Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun mooted the idea as an effort to encourage the people in Sabah to contribute their families' heritage and legacy to the society.

The participants can send photos of individuals or families that were captured in 1965 or earlier, in line with the department's anniversary celebration.

The top three winners will stand a chance to receive cash prizes of RM1,500, RM1,000 and RM800, respectively, while consolation prizes will be awarded to the five best entries.

"Old photographs, especially family photos, are actually an invaluable heritage of the respective families as they entailed many historical moments and occasions which were unknown to the public.

"Hence, the Sabah Museum plays its role by organising this competition for the people to take part and at the same time give an opportunity to the people to look back the history and struggle of our past generations in leading their lives.

"The public can also learn the history of the local communities in the social, economic and culture aspects towards developing our nation," he told a press conference at his office in Wisma Tun Fuad Stephens, here, Thursday. Also present was State Museum Director Joanna Kitingan.

However, Masidi said he viewed the programme as not a competition but an assembly of valuable old photographs aged at least 50 years old.

"I wouldn't call this inaugural programme a competition because every old picture has its own sentimental value and the family history is also different from each other.

"We want to make this contest as friendly as it can so that the contestants and the public would get to know each other. To me, those who submit the entries are all winners as they share their lives with other people…it's just that we give away tokens of appreciation for the best entries," he said.

Nonetheless, Masidi said the department will display the top three entries at the Exhibition Gallery of the State Museum here for public view.

"The contestants can send as many entries as they want but the old photographs must be original and no changes, including not using the 'super-imposed' technique or other methods, to tamper with the authenticity. Each photo must also have caption that relates what it is all about.

The forms can be obtained from the State Museum or call Evren Subal at 088-253199/225033 or at the Museum branches like in Sandakan, Keningau and Semporna. They can be downloaded from the official website of Sabah Museum Department.

Masidi said the forms must be sent to the State Museum or its branches before Sept 12, this year and the winners would be announced and informed after the panel of juries made their ultimate decisions.
